Meet Lesley, Office Manger

I began my journey with Dolphin Drilling in 1997 as Secretary to the Managing Director. It was an exciting start to my career with the company. From there, my career has evolved significantly at Dolphin, holding the following roles: Marketing Administrator, Marketing Coordinator and my current role as Office Manager.

Each role has provided valuable opportunities for professional growth, enabling me to contribute to the company’s success in meaningful ways. One of the aspects I enjoy most is organising events for both our employees and clients. These events not only strengthen relationships and create a sense of community (something we truly value) but also reflect the company’s culture of teamwork and engagement, something I take great pride in being a part of.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. Over the years, I’ve taken on different roles, worked with various teams, and navigated changes within the industry—all of which have reinforced the value of being open to new challenges.

I started at Dolphin Drilling in 1984 as a Roughneck on the Borgsten Dolphin. It was my first of many roles at the Company and the start of an exciting career journey with Dolphin Drilling. The positions held at Dolphin include Roughneck, Derrickman, Assistant Driller, Driller, Nightpusher, Toolpusher, Project Manager, Rig Manager, Operations Manager, Managing Director and my current role as Chief Operating Officer. In this position, I use my strategic leadership skills to effectively manage, guide, and mentor rig teams and drilling crews to achieve superior operational performance, team effectiveness, and HSE compliance.

My career progression has been driven by hard work, adaptability, and the opportunities provided by Dolphin.

Dolphin’s culture is family-oriented and values flexibility for its employees. It’s an easy and enjoyable place to work, with continuous opportunities for career advancement. I’ve always appreciated how the company values every individual’s contribution, creating an environment where collaboration thrives and colleagues feel supported.

I first set foot on a Dolphin rig in the Westcon yard in Ølensvåg in October 2009. I was employed by EOS, commissioning new MCCs and switchgear on the Byford Dolphin. I got on well with the team, and after five months in the shipyard, working closely with the Senior Electricians, I was asked if I’d be interested in staying on as a Night Shift Electrician, an opportunity I was very happy to take. I really enjoyed my time on the Byford Dolphin, it was a great place to work, and I gained a lot of valuable experience.

There’s a strong company culture at Dolphin Drilling – one that’s welcoming, inclusive and engaging. I feel inspired to do my best work, and there’s real satisfaction in contributing to something meaningful. The team spirit is genuine; you feel part of something, not just a number.

Although the company has become smaller over time, it still has the same feel it had when I joined - a family company where employees are valued equally.

Being part of Dolphin Drilling has brought me gratification during my employment. Being a smaller company, there is a unique mixture of employees who collaborate together as a team to ensure we maintain operational uptime to an expected company standard and resolve the daily challenges we face without compromising the operations of the Modu's. No two days are the same, that's for sure.

Within the technical department at Dolphin Drilling, we are all valued team contributors. Management listens to the employees who strive to ensure the daily workday is productive and dynamic. The team plans to deliver the goals set for them with professionalism and in a timely manner. Dolphin Drilling is a very flexible employer that trusts its dependable employees to go about their business.

I believe there is a strong emphasis on teamwork and open communication, both onshore and offshore, within Dolphin, which helps create a supportive environment and culture. I enjoy the variety of tasks the role can bring, as I find that no two days are the same.

It’s rewarding to work together with a team, share ideas, and develop solutions that contribute to the success of a project or task. I’m also enjoying learning and growing within my role.

What truly sets Dolphin Drilling apart from other companies in the industry is not only this culture of collaboration but also the long-term commitment of its employees.

Compared to the larger companies I’ve worked for, Dolphin feels more like a family. It’s more personal. You feel as though you matter at Dolphin, that you are seen and valued, and you can genuinely make a difference.

Dolphin has shown resilience through industry shifts and downturns. While many companies have disappeared or been taken over, Dolphin has kept going. It’s faced many challenges over the past few years, but luckily, we have three good rigs that are run and maintained by excellent, highly skilled offshore teams and well-supported onshore. It’s that combined effort that’s kept us moving forward.

I’d love to see Dolphin continue to grow—adding to the current fleet and, over time, replacing one or two rigs over the next decade. The company has everything it needs to succeed, and I want to be an integral part of that process.

One of the biggest differences from other companies is how well we’re looked after by our HR team. I’ve worked for other companies, and have friends who still do, and the level of support we get, especially around travel to and from the rig, is far better than most. There have been times when crew change situations have been less than ideal, whether it’s hotel issues, flight arrangements or layovers, but Dolphin always does what it can to make things better.

It's the people that have kept me committed to Dolphin Drilling for so long. Over the years and in various installations, I’ve worked with some truly great individuals. I have worked with some people within Dolphin for many, many years, and we have been through a lot together. They are friends to me, not just colleagues. When you’re surrounded by good people, you don’t want to leave.
