Celebrating 60 years of Dolphin Drilling: A conversation with Mark Gray, Assistant Rig Manager

As Dolphin Drilling turns 60, we celebrate the individuals who have shaped our story. In this article, we catch up with Mark Gray, our Assistant Rig Manager on the Blackford Dolphin, currently based in India.

Mark first joined Dolphin Drilling in 1997 as a roustabout on the Borgny Dolphin, progressing through the ranks to Assistant Driller. After a short period at a different company, Mark rejoined the team in 2008.

Over the years, Mark gained invaluable experience on various rigs, including the Borgsten, Bolette, and Blackford, in positions such as assistant driller, driller, cyber driller, night toolpusher, and senior toolpusher. After 22 years offshore, he transferred to the position he still holds today.

Below, Mark reflects on his journey with Dolphin and the experiences that shaped his career.

How did you start your journey at Dolphin Drilling?

I started my offshore career with Dolphin Drilling in February 1997 as a roustabout on the Borgny Dolphin. While onboard, I progressed through the ranks, from roustabout to roughneck, derrickman, and then assistant driller, gaining valuable experience while the rig operated in the North Sea, the Falkland Islands, and the Gulf of Mexico.

When the Borgny Dolphin returned to the North Sea in December 2001, I briefly left Dolphin Drilling to join Dolphin Well Service. However, after the company was sold, I returned to Dolphin Drilling, working as an assistant driller and later as a driller onboard the Borgsten Dolphin, which was located in the North Sea between 2008 and 2010.

In 2010, I took the opportunity to work as a Cyber Driller on the Blackford Dolphin in Brazil, then returned to the Borgsten as a Night Toolpusher from 2011 to 2013. That experience prepared me well for a major career step in February 2013, when I transferred to the Bolette Dolphin drillship at the Hyundai shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. I spent several rewarding years gaining ultradeep-water operational experience, working as Toolpusher and later Senior Toolpusher for Anadarko in locations such as Colombia, Liberia, and the Ivory Coast.

After 22 years offshore, I transitioned into an onshore role as Assistant Rig Manager. Since then, I’ve supported the Borgland Dolphin in both the UK and Norwegian sectors, and have rotated internationally with the Blackford Dolphin, supporting operations in Mexico, Nigeria, and currently in Kakinada, India working with OIL India.
