Celebrating 60 years of Dolphin Drilling: A conversation with Suzanne Coutts, Senior HR Advisor

I

As Dolphin Drilling turns 60, we are celebrating the individuals who have shaped our story. In this article, we catch up with Suzanne Coutts, our Senior HR Advisor, based in our Aberdeen office.

Suzanne first joined Dolphin Drilling on a temporary contract in 2020, a pivotal time when the Blackford Dolphin was preparing to commence operations in Mexico amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. Initially tasked with supporting both the Blackford and Bolette Dolphin, she quickly became the dedicated HR point of contact for the Blackford, navigating the complexities of international operations.

Over the years, her role expanded significantly, supporting deployments for the Blackford Dolphin in Mexico and Nigeria, and later taking on responsibility for the Paul B. Loyd Jr. (PBLJ) acquired from Transocean in early 2024, and Borgland Dolphin, located in Las Palmas. Recognising the growing demands of the role and structural changes within the HR team, she was promoted to Senior HR Advisor in 2024. In this capacity, Suzanne oversees HR, payroll, and logistical support across all three rigs, while also managing the HR & Logistics Coordinators.

What attracted you to work at Dolphin Drilling?

Dolphin Drilling is similar in nature to my previous employer, although the drilling side of operations was a new area for me. I was familiar with the company through colleagues—both past and present—who spoke highly of their experiences, and I saw it as a great opportunity for professional growth. The role itself was aligned mainly with positions I had held previously, which made the transition easier. What has truly made a difference is the supportive culture at Dolphin, particularly the HR team, which has been so crucial in my continued engagement with the company. I’m constantly learning and developing new skills, and while some days present more challenges than others, I genuinely enjoy the work I do.

What are some of the most memorable projects or achievements you've been a part of?

The crew up of the Blackford Dolphin in preparation for the rig commencing operations in Mexico stands out, as this was one of my first major projects after having newly started with the Company. Another would be continuing to support the Blackford Dolphin through operations in Nigeria and India, as it hasn’t been short of challenges.

I was also nominated and shortlisted for a cHeRrie Award in 2022 in the category of Fantastic HR Advisor. Although I did not win, being shortlisted in the category was a massive achievement.

What sets Dolphin Drilling apart?

I believe there is a strong emphasis on teamwork and open communication, both onshore and offshore, within Dolphin, which helps create a supportive environment and culture. I enjoy the variety of tasks the role can bring, as I find that no two days are the same. It’s rewarding to work together with a team, share ideas, and develop solutions that contribute to the success of a project or task. I’m also enjoying learning and growing within my role. What truly sets Dolphin Drilling apart from other companies in the industry is not only this culture of collaboration but also the long-term commitment of its employees.

Any words of wisdom for new starters at Dolphin Drilling?

My advice to new employees starting their journey with Dolphin Drilling would be to stay focused and proactive. Take the time to learn from your experienced colleagues - their knowledge is invaluable. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and continuously look for ways to improve.
